January 11, 2008
China-based telecommunications equipment provider Huawei Technologies recently announced that the company won the bid for deploying a commercial WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) 802.16e network in Bulgaria, Chinese-language Sina Tech reported.

TransTelecom, a Bulgarian telecom operator founded in 2003, awarded the contract to Huawei. Pursuant to the contract, Huawei will provide end-to-end WiMAX solutions on the 3.5GHz frequency band, including terminals, to TransTelecom. In addition, Huawei will be responsible for the upgrade of TransTelecom's central exchange equipment, in order to meet the requirements for the 2008 inauguration of fully mobile WiMAX operations.

The WiMAX network is projected to cover the central business districts and hot spots in major Bulgarian cities, including the capital Sofia as well as major harbor city Varna.
